Reliquaries
Considered the hallmark of medieval devotion, a reliquary is a container for a holy relic. A relic is an object surviving from an earlier time, especially one of historical or sentimental value. Relics often include part of a deceased holy person’s body or belongings and are kept as objects of reverence. Relics are used for storytelling, and like memory, they are timeless.
The porcelain reliquaries that I’ve created (with touches of glaze and luster) address topics including: American school shootings in Heard ‘Em Comin; aging with Pieces of Me; Hail to Onychophagy, a nod to nail biting; loss of a loved one in Forgiving Your Indiscretions or She Was a Saint; and extending belief in a nostalgia bone with Reliquary for a Nostalgia Bone.
