London Calling: Horror House, House of God, House of Ill Repute, Row House
I recently returned from London, England. As an Agnes Gund Traveling Scholarship recipient, the venture was financed by the Cleveland Institute of Art. First issued in 1923, more than 200 CIA students have received this award for travel. I was one of six seniors selected in 2017.
London Calling is a collection of hand-built porcelain sculptures that incorporate photolithography, glaze and luster. Queen Victoria’s rein (1837-1901) was an age that changed the way human life was perceived. Life was hard and scientific leaps resulted in a crisis of religious faith. Workhouses, sweat shops, prostitution and child labor were common. Plenty of ammunition for Sigmund Freud’s many theories. This series reflects the city’s grittiness and the desperate plight of the people.
